overview

The weeklong traveling multi-adventure day camp is pretty epic. We expose the campers to and immerse them in all of ABC’s core outdoor activities: rock climbing & rappelling, hiking & wilderness survival, water sports (rafting, SUP, kayaking, sailing) and biking. Each day we transport the campers to a new beautiful outdoor location and focus on a single activity category, except for Day 5, which is reserved for an exciting combo adventure. Each day the group is confronted with new scenery, new activities, new challenges and new rewards.

Campers will also learn and practice the 7 principles of Leave No Trace Ethics, which emphasize low-impact techniques of how to recreate responsibly in the outdoors (e.g. pack it in, pack it out).

Itinerary

Day 1 – Rock Climbing and Rappelling

We spend the day in a beautiful gorge along a horseshoe bend in the Tohickon Creek in High Rocks State Park near Ralph Stover State Park located in Bucks County, PA. The exposed climbing faces range from 40ft to 100ft high, offering great views of Tohickon Creek and the surrounding forest.

We spend time doing introductions, icebreaker activities and reviewing safety guidelines. We will distribute and review climbing gear, learn climbing knots and proper communication for climbing and the basics of belaying. Campers also learn the fundamentals of rappelling. The 100ft rappel station at Stover is amazing. We climb and rappel all day!

The outdoor rock climbing and rappelling day excursion is designed to accommodate a group of campers with a wide range of climbing experience. Great for beginner climbers (includes first-timers) to the more experienced, including those who climb indoors at a rock gym and want to experience real rock in the outdoors. If a camper really enjoys this day, consider also registering for ABC’s week-long traveling Rock Climbing Day Camp.

Day 2 – 22 Waterfall Wonder Hike (long day)

We travel to the awe-inspiring Ricketts Glen State Park – a waterfall wonderland and one of the most scenic areas in Pennsylvania. We will hike the challenging 7.2 mile long Falls Trail while exploring the Glens Natural Area, a designated National Natural Landmark. The Falls Trail boasts a series of 22 wild, free-flowing waterfalls such as the 94-foot Ganoga Falls – the highest of the 22 named waterfalls.

On this trip, campers experience the power of nature in one of its purest forms and gain an appreciation for the beauty of wilderness. The absolute beauty of Ricketts Glen imprints itself into the hearts and minds of all those who explore her majestic waterfalls. This day is about just being in nature to observe, hear, feel and smell the surroundings and wildness without a particular agenda. Ricketts Glen is a place for campers’ imaginations to run wild.

Day 3 – Standup Paddle Boarding, Kayaking & Sailing

All water all day as the campers dive in and learn the basics of standup paddle boarding, kayaking and sailing on Marsh Creek Lake in Downingtown – West Chester , PA. This day is in collaboration with Marsh Creek Watersports, who provides professional instructors for the campers and all equipment for all scheduled water-based activities.

The day is structured into three 1 1/2 hour activity-specific modules, enabling the campers to focus on learning the skills and techniques of each water-sport. Each module begins with on-land instruction and throughout the day the importance of water safety is emphasized. The instruction continues on the water as the campers push off shore to explore the beauty of Marsh Creek Lake.

Day 4 – Hiking & Outdoor Survival Skills

Day 5 – Pedals & Paddles (long day)

We travel to the heart of the Pocono Mountains and explore the Lehigh Gorge State Park by both land and water. This day is in collaboration with Whitewater Challengers, who provides shuttle services, all the bikes (including helmets), rafting equipment (including life jackets) and professional rafting guides.

On this multi-adventure outing, campers first pedal their bikes for 9 miles down the incredibly scenic, smooth and slightly downhill Lehigh Gorge bike trail. For the second leg of this action-packed adventure, campers hop off their bikes and into a raft, tube or an inflatable kayak (depending on the water level) for a 13.5 mile journey down the majestic Lehigh River filled with whitewater rapids.
